Tara Cotumaccio

In a few days, I will be participating in the Ocular Immunology & Uveitis' Walk for Vision. This walk is extremely personal for me. When I was 4, I was diagnosed with Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis (an autoimmune disease). A few months later, I was diagnosed with uveitis, which is a complication of JRA. Uveitis is the inflammation of the eye, and if untreated, leads to vision loss and other complications. I lost the vision in my left eye due to uveitis.

I've had multiple cataracts and glaucoma surgeries as a child and young adult because of uveitis. Two of these surgeries took place in Boston, which is why this city has a special place in my heart. There has been times where I've woken up and haven't been able to see. I've had to take injections since I was 5, and used to miss school for infusions and doctors appointments. I was a very happy kid, but as I got older, I began to realize how different I felt from other people my age. Because of this, in high school, I rarely talked about my diseases. However, in college, I gained the confidence to open up to others and found another support system besides my family.

This is why participating in this walk is very important to me. I will be meeting people of all ages who have been through similar experiences as me. I will get to reunite with my good friend Victoria Laprade who also has uveitis. I will get to be apart of something that is bigger than myself.
I would truly appreciate any donation which helps goes to research that would find a cure for uveitis. Thank you for reading.
